Gum recession is when the tissue that surrounds a tooth begins to wear away, leaving the tooth and its roots exposed. You may notice sensitivity, teeth appearing longer or notches above the tooth. If recession goes left untreated, pockets may develop in the gums allowing food and bacteria to build up. This can lead to advanced gum disease and may end with having the tooth removed.
What are some of the things that cause gums to recede?
1. The main cause of gum recession is periodontal (gum) disease. Gum disease damages the bone and gum tissue that keep your teeth in place.
2. Genetics is also a factor in gum disease and recession.
3. Inadequate dental hygiene, like brushing aggressively, can wear away at the gum tissue. Tartar build-up due to a lack of brushing and flossing can also cause gums to become damaged.
4. Teeth grinding or clenching can be another cause of recession. If done with enough force, gums can actually begin to recede.
5. Lip or tongue piercings can rub the gums and irritate them to the point where gum tissue is worn away.
Proper oral care is the first step in ensuring your gums remain healthy. Be sure to brush and floss twice a day as well as visit the dentist on a regular basis for check-ups.
